Edgar Allison Peers (1891-1952) was an English Hispanist of international fame. Chair of Spanish Studies at the University of Liverpool for three decades, he wrote and edited some sixty books and translated the complete works of both St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Ávila. A devout High Anglican, Peers earned the praise and the imprimatur of the Roman Catholic Church, and requested, upon his death, that the Holy Mass be offered for him on all Carmelite altars in the world.
