This 1863 publication was compiled from letters sent from New Zealand by the young Samuel Butler (1835-1902). They describe practical and financial aspects of his profitable sheep-farming enterprise, colonial life, and the landscapes, flora and fauna of South Island. Butler's Utopian novel Erewhon (1872) drew on the experiences described here.
